“Take small steps”
Shamina Shafiq, member of National Commission for Women (NCW)
talks about the role of NCW, status of women in the society and more in an
interview with Ishan Kapoor of AIS Gur 46, IV K.
Shafiq defines NCW as the apex national level organisation
of India. Its primary role is to ensure that the rights of women in the country
are protected. When asked about her role in NCW, she said that she looks into
complaints of women who are victim of any kind of crime and to ensure that
women are aware of their rights.
Shamina Shafiq feels that there has been a better approach
towards women’s status in society after the December 16, 2012 Nirbhaya
incident. She said that as students we should be aware of our legal rights and
behave as responsible citizens. If values can be imbibed in children at an
early age then we can eliminate crime against women faster.
